Cracked Finger Tips? Recent Recommendations from People’s Pharmacy

Recently in a People’s Pharmacy e-mail we received dated November 29, 2011, there was a discussion about cracked finger tips. While certainly not a medical emergency nor requiring a trip to the ER, cracked finger tips can be quite painful and annoying. This time of year when the temperature dips to around freezing, you are working outside in the wind and get your hands wet or work with wet gloves on, or even inside with the dry air, you tend to get cracked hands. Working with chemicals like we do refinishing furniture and polishing metals, also dry out ones skin. Even when you try to keep from spreading colds or other infections, if you wash your hands on a regular basis, your going to run into rough chapped hands or cracked finger tips sooner or later. It is just bound to happen. In the Peoples Pharmacy article several remedies were suggested. ThePolish Guy does recommend O’Keeffe’s Healthy Hands, but others mentioned in the article including ; Udderly Smooth Udder Cream, Vaseline, Preparation H, Aquaphor , and even Instant Glue & Crazy Glue. We don’t know about how effective all of these may be, but we have had good luck With O’Keeffe’s Healthy Hands. Bernice Madigan in the Boston University Longevity Study

This post is a little off topic, but when you receive a Christmas letter from the 10th oldest person in the USA and they live in your home town, you have to take notice. Aunt Bennie as she is know in these parts is 112 1/2 years old this month of December 2011. She reports that it has been a very good year for her with no hospital stays, with just a cold or two. She was very happy that 200 people were at her birthday party this summer at the Daniel’s Farm where she resides. Aunt Bennie is participating in the Boston University study on longevity. Her standing right now is 26th in the world, 10th in the USA and number one in Massachusetts. Aunt Bennie, we feel privileged to be on your Christmas letter list. Merry Christmas and a very Happy and Healthy New Year to you.

Bernice Madigan of Cheshire is 111 years young going on 112

You will have to excuse that this post is off topic a bit. But we do have living in our home town of Cheshire, Massachusetts a resident who is 111 years old going on 112. Bernice Madigan was born July 24, 1899. Below is a picture of last years birthday cake.

Cracked hands & fingers from chemicals & water

If you are reading this post, chances are that you hands and fingers get those painful and unsightly cracks on them. Most anyone that details autos or boats, clean guns, antiques, molds or anything where you might use metal polish runs into this problem. If you use nitrile gloves this does help, but you probably are washing your hands a lot. We were told about this product by a man that does landscaping. He swore by it. Its called O’Keeffe’s Working Hands. Here is our review of O’Keeffe’s. It comes in a small jar that you can keep right in your pocket or work bench. It is a soft but firm cream that spreads on easily. It has no odor that we noticed, nor was it greasy at all. The big deal about this product was that in a couple of days our cracks were healed and have been staying that way for over 2 weeks. We recommend that you try some O’Keeffe’s. They even make a kind that is a little different for your feet, called O’Keeffe’s Healthy Feet. If your washing equipment even your feet maybe getting wet which leads to a similar problem. Bernice Madigan, Massachusetts newest Super Centenarian

This post is certainly off topic, but it seems when Massachusetts oldest living person at 110 years old invites you to her birthday party, all should make note of it. Bernice Madigan was born July 24th, 1899 and spent her early youth in Cheshire. After graduating from Adams High School, she passed her civil service exam and moved to Washington. She lived there for nearly 90 years working before she retired at the Veteran’s Administration and then the Treasury. “Aunt Bennie” as she is known by the locals here remembers every inauguration from Warren G. Harding. For those of you weak in history that list would also include Calvin Coolage, Herbert Clark Hoover, Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight David Eisenhower, John Fitzgerald Kennedy, Lyndon Baines Johnson, Richard Milhous Nixon, Gerald Rudolph Ford, James Earl Carter, Jr, Ronald Wilson Reagan, George Herbert Walker Bush, William Jefferson Clinton, George Walker Bush and Barack Hussein Obama. Aunt Bennie is sharp as can be, fun to talk with and spry for any age.

The pictures below show her riding on the Hoosac Hose Company’s (Cheshire Fire Department) 1935 Diamond T Pumper truck. Aunt Bennie climbed right up onto that truck and rode around the barn at Rolling Acres Farm where she now makes her home. The beautiful farm is owned by the Daniels family. Elaine Daniels is Aunt Bennies’ niece. In the last picture Aunt Bennie meets and prepares to steal a kiss from what may well be the tallest fireman in Massachusetts…….

Show n Shine Corvette Show Lanesboro, MA

Traveling up Route 7 near Pontoosuc Lake, we came across the Show n Shine Corvette Show in Lanesboro, Massachusetts. It was a dull and drizzly day, but there were a number of Corvettes that were fun to view and a nice way to spend Fathers Day . Corvettes of Berkshire sponsored the show with proceeds benefiting the Berkshire Eagle Santa Toy Fund. If you are interested in the club click here for more information.
