Cleaning up a pair of machinist’s precision 1 2 3 blocks with Simichrome polish

October 3, 2011 · Filed Under Simichrome · Comment

This pair of hardened steel milling / machinists 1 2 3 blocks were found in an old tool chest. They had more than a little surface rust on them. A few dabs of Simichrome polish was applied to the 6 surfaces. The polish was allowed to sit for about 3 minutes and then vigorously rubbed with 0000 steel wool. A microfiber cloth was then used to buff to a nice sheen. As a last step the remaining Simichrome paste residue was purged. The blocks were then buffed again. As you can see there was a large improvement, making them usable again. Some nicks and light pitting remained, but you can not realistically expect a metal polish of any brand to resurface hardened steel. Simichrome comes in 3 sizes, a 50 gram ounce tube, a 250 gram can and a large 1000 gram  can.
