Instructions and Application :

1. Apply a small amount of Autosol onto your finger tip and spread it thinly on the face of the Zippo. Just a small amount of polish is needed. Cover the entire surface and let it sit there and work for a minute.

2. Then using fairly light pressure rub the polish in the direction of the grain.

3. Using a soft microfiber cloth wipe off the polish residue. Then repeat steps one and two on the backside of the tape measure.

4. The top and sides were not brushed but just plain chrome, so the microfiber cloth took off the finger prints and it looked like new.

5. Total elapsed time to do this was around 3 or 4 minutes.

Instructions and Application :

1. Using a pair of nitrile gloves helps to keep your hands clean as well as being a good way to apply polish. Apply a small amount of Autosol onto your finger tip and spread it thinly on the surface of the car wheel rim. Just a small amount of polish is needed. .

2. I chose to only do about 1/2 of the rim so that you could see the dramatic difference after using Autosol polish to remove the rust and corrosion. Using light pressure rub the polish in small circular motions with either your gloved finger tip or a soft paper towel.

3. Turn the paper towel over to a clean spot and wipe off the polish residue. Repeat steps 1, 2 & 3 again if necessary.

4. Buff with a microfiber cloth to a nice clean bright finish.

5. Total elapsed time to do this was about 5 minutes.

This comment was e-mailed to us by a man who found not only thePolishGuy.com videos informative but the products discussed helpful. He also bought the product from our recommended supplier for Autosol Metal Polish, WinterBrookFarmAntiques.com It is appreciated when you mention us and our recommended suppliers to your friends, colleagues and especially if you would give us a link back from your blog or on favorite forums.

“This is in response to your request for feedback about this product. It has amazed me to say the least. I have a very large rotary valve tuba that is normally a gorgeous nickel plated instrument. In places where I need to hold it, I noticed it started to get somewhat of a deep blackened appearance. The nickle shiny luster was fading in those areas. I tried a polishing cloth made for nickel that did not do anything for the blackened area, but did clean off the fingerprints that accumulates. I was concerned that the plating was simply wearing off in those areas of normal use. I began to search on line for more info about cleaning or polishing nickel plated metals, and google brought me to a number of websites to view, yours begin one of them. Your cleaning videos helped me to decide that it was worth trying your product and I felt confident that it would not wear off whatever plating I still had on my instrument. I have used it tonight, and at first was worried as I rubbed the polish on the tuba and saw black coming off into the rag!!After buffing it down and cleaning off the excess polish, I had the nice shiny luster again with no deep blackened area. Unfortunately it will be hard to take a photo that will show this difference because of the curves of the metal at that point and light reflections that make it hard to see the difference unless you look at it real life and move it around.”

“My stacks on my tractor trailer had rust stains on them where condensation from the exhaust ran down the outside. I polished them yesterday with Autosol polish. Simply rub the product on the let it sit for a minute and then buff it off. Most rust should come off first try but if it doesn’t just try another application. Eventually it will all come off and stay off if you give it an a cleaning every other week with it. One tube will do your exhaust tip for a couple of years.” End of quote.

3. Take a soft paper towel wipe off the polish residue. Then repeat steps one and two but this time work in the polish in and around the Harley logos with a horse hair detail brush. Horse hair being soft will not scratch the surface of the lighter. Another paper towel was used again to remove all polish residue.

4. The the lighter was buffed with a microfiber cloth to a nice clean shine.

5. Total elapsed time to do this was around 5 minutes. The pictures tell the story.

1. Apply a small amount of Shine on the finger tip of your nitrile glove and spread on the surface of the candlestick. Let it sit there for a few seconds up to a minute.

2. Gently rub the Shine polish in small circular motion with your gloved finger. Wearing gloves will keep your hands clean as the tarnish that lifts will be black and get your hands dirty. The polish is not dangerous and some people prefer not to wear any hand protection. In that case just apply the polish with a soft cloth.

3. Wipe off the polish residue with a paper towel and repeat steps 2 and 3. If any polish residue is left in cracks or crevices or even in the intricate pattern details of your candlestick, a good tool to remove and buff it with is a horsehair detail brush. This is because the brushes gentle fibers will not scratch delicate objects.

4. Buff to a soft shine with a microfiber cloth.

5. Total elapsed time to do this candlestick holder was just under 10 minutes.

Today’s post deals with a sheet of badly scuffed acrylic plastic. It is the type that you would use in a window to replace glass, sometimes referred to as plexiglas. When you purchase them new at a lumber or hardware store, they normally have a protective sheet on them that peels off to keep them in good condition. The one we found to demonstrate with had been laying around for a while and had become quite scratched and scuffed. So much so that you really could not see through it very clearly.

We used Autosol Polish to see if we could make this piece useful again. The polish would not take out a deep scratch that you could catch your finger nail in, but it certainly improved the acrylic sheet so that you could see through it again. Take a look at the before and after pictures and see for yourself.

1. Just a small amount of Autosol onto your finger tip about the size of a nickel is all you need. Then spread it thinly on the surface of the acrylic sheet.

2. Then using light pressure rub the polish in a tight circular motion with either your finger tip or a soft cloth.

3. Turn the cloth over to a clean spot and wipe off the polish residue. Repeat steps 1, 2 & 3 again if necessary.

4. We then did the same application to the other side of the acrylic glass sheet.

5. As a last step we buffed with a microfiber cloth to remove any remaining polish and produce a nice clean finish.

6. Before using the sheet you may want to just wash it off with warm soapy water and rinse to take off any remaining polish film.

5. Total elapsed time to do this was about 5 minutes. Take a look at the results. We did leave one corner unpolished so you can see the difference.

The National Trust Manual of Housekeeping on page 256 section 6.7.3 Removing tarnish and other corrosion. “If tarnish is heavy, use a mild abrasive paste advised for copper/brass instead. Autosol has long been used by National Trust for this. Applying sparingly on a soft cloth or cotton wool swab with a light touch, as more pressure means more risk of abrasion. Wipe off with a white paper towel and then buff as above. Light rusting can be removed from burnished iron or steel which has not been waxed by Solvol Autosol as above, but moving in a lateral direction. A curved plate brush or a small natural bristle toothbrush can be used to reach into crevices. For heavier rusting use fine 0000 steel wire wool together with a mild abrasvive paste as above, the latter catching any fragmated wire wool. Buff as above to remove traces of paste. Light rust from cast iron gates, firebacks and kitchen ranges can also be removed using 0000 steel wool.”

Pictured below are before and after pictures of 2 old sleigh bells on a short leather strap, that were polished using The National Trust Manual of Housekeeping technique. For good measure the leather strap was cleaned using Autosol Leather Cleaner.

Materials Used to polish bell & leather strap:

Autosol Polish in a tube

Autosol Leather Cleaner

Nitrile gloves

1. Apply Autosol polish right from the tube onto your finger tip ( the use of nitrile gloves help keep your hands clean ).

2. Spread polish evenly over the entire surface of each bell and let sit for a couple of minutes.

3. With a soft cloth ( micro fiber cloths work well for this ) buff the Autosol paste off the brass bell.

4. Use the small horse hair natural bristle brush to get out any remaing polish from the crevices of the bell slots. Repeat steps above until you have the shine you desire.

5. Use the Autosol Leather Cleaner directly from the tube. Put a few small dabs of cleaner onto the leather strap and rub in with a soft cloth. Flip the cloth to a clean spot and buff clean.

One of the answers may well be from the makers of the Sweetheart and Oval wood cook stoves, Heartland Appliances. Click here to go to their website. Under their FAQs, they have the same question. Heartland Appliances answer is “Nickel plated trim can be cleaned with any non abrasive metal or chrome polish such as Autosol or Flitz. Autosol is our preferred choice…….. “. In the Heartland Appliance manuals under the maintenance section for cook tops, further recommendations include “The stove tops and lids are highly polished untreated cast iron. To minimize the potential for permanent stains, always maintain the top with cooking oil. During periods of heavy use, a light coating is sufficient. When you will not be using the stove for a week or more, give the top a heavier coat and re-apply as needed. Always remove food, water or rust stains as quickly as possible. If such stains are left unattended, a permanent mark can result. To help remove stains, use a medium/fine aluminum oxide abrasive sanding block, available at most hardware stores, or a metal cleaner such as Flitz, in conjunction with fine (000) steel wool. Do not be afraid to use elbow grease.”

In this polishing tip a motion sensor lens is cleaned and restored using Autosol Metal Polish. This light would not come on when you came into its range. As a result the security flood lights would not turn on. Rather than replace the whole unit, Autosol Polish was used to clean the fogged lens of the motion detector. The unit had been in service for about 15 years and the plastic lens had become hazed over and obsure. Autosol Polish was used to clean the lens to its original clarity. The light sensor now works fine and did not need to be replaced.

Instructions and Application :

1. Using a pair of nitrile gloves helps to keep your hands clean as well as being a good way to apply polish. Apply a small amount of Autosol onto your finger tip and spread it thinly on the face of the motion detectors lens. Just a small amount of polish is needed. Cover the entire plastic lens and let it sit there and work for a minute or two.

2. Then using light pressure rub the polish in small circular motions with either your gloved finger tip or a soft cloth over the lens.

3. Turn the cloth over to a clean spot and wipe off the polish residue. Repeat steps 1, 2 & 3 again if necessary.

4. Buff with a microfiber cloth to a nice clean finish.

5. Total elapsed time to do this was about 5 minutes. That is way faster and easier than rewiring in a new motion detector and less costly too.
