Restoring the shine to a Harley Davidson Zippo lighter with Autosol metal polish

November 24, 2009 · Filed Under Autosol · Comment

In today’s polishing post a collectible Harley Davidson Zippo lighter is cleaned and restored using Autosol Metal Polish.  This lighter was purchased at a local tag sale.  It was made in 2002 and has seen daily use. Over time the  20 some odd Harley Davidson bar and shield logos had become quite tarnished. It seemed a good project to see what a little Autosol metal polish could do to improve its looks.

Autosol Polish in Tube

Materials Used:

Instructions and Application :

1. I started out using a pair of nitrile gloves on my hands to apply polish.  Apply a small amount of Autosol onto your finger tip and spread it thinly on the face of the lighter. Just a small amount of polish is needed. Cover the entire surface and let it sit there and work for a minute or two.

2. Then using light pressure rub the polish in small circular motions with either your gloved finger tip or a soft cloth.

3. Take a soft paper towel wipe off the polish residue. Then repeat steps one and two but this time work in the polish in and around the Harley logos with a horse hair detail brush. Horse hair being soft will not scratch the surface of the lighter. Another  paper towel was used  again to  remove all polish residue.

4. The the lighter was buffed with a microfiber cloth to a nice clean shine.

5. Total elapsed time to do this was around 5 minutes. The pictures tell the story.

November 16, 2009 · Filed Under Simichrome · Comment

If you have any vintage or antique furniture, you know how the brass casters get really tarnished and grungy looking. Just a simple application of  Simichrome polish will make a dramatic difference. You may not need to replace your casters after all if you follow these 4 easy steps.

Simichrome Polish in a tube

Materials Used:

Application:

1. Apply a small dab of Simichrome right from the tube onto any soft cloth. A microfiber cloth is a very good choice if you have one.

2. Take the cloth and apply the polish and rub it evenly over the entire surface of the wheel and stem with moderate pressure.

3. Flip your cloth to a clean area and shine to the desired sheen.

4. Use a  Horse Hair Detail Brush to get the polish in and out of the areas that can’t be reached with a cloth. Re-buff the furniture caster briskly with the microfiber cloth to the desired sheen.

5. That’s it, you are done in a matter of minutes. The Simichrome will leave a protective film that will retard further tarnish and keep the caster wheels looking great.

2. Let the polish stand for about 5 to 6 minutes and then gently polish with 0000 steel wool.

3. Wipe off the polish residue before it dries with a paper towel.   Re-apply following steps 1 & 2 if needed. Buff to the desired sheen with a soft micro fiber cloth for best results. Any soft cloth will do but microfiber cloths do in fact give the best final results. Plus if you have some around you will find that just a quick wipe brings the shine right back. Polishing a silver candlestick holder with Autosol Shine Polish

November 6, 2009 · Filed Under Autosol · Comment

In this polishing tip an antique silver twin candlestick  holder is restored using Dursol Shine Metal Polish. Dursol Shine is made by the makers of Autosol Metal Polish in Germany.

Durosl Shine Metal Polish

Materials Used:

  • Dursol® Shine Metal Polish in a 75 ml tube (3.33 ounces) tube
  • Microfiber cloth
  • Nitrile Gloves
  • Detail Brush made of 100% horse hair
  • Instructions and Application :

    1. Apply a small amount of Shine on the finger tip of your nitrile glove and spread on the surface of the candlestick.  Let it sit there for a few seconds up to a minute.

    2. Gently rub the Shine polish in small circular motion with  your gloved finger. Wearing gloves will keep your hands clean as the tarnish that lifts will be black and get your hands dirty. The polish is not dangerous and some people prefer not to wear any hand protection. In that case just apply the polish with a soft cloth.

    3. Wipe off the polish residue with a paper towel and repeat steps 2 and 3. If any polish residue is left in cracks or crevices or even in the intricate pattern details of your candlestick, a good tool to remove and buff it with is a horsehair detail brush. This is because  the brushes gentle fibers  will not scratch delicate objects.

    4. Buff to a soft shine with a microfiber cloth.

    5. Total elapsed time to do this candlestick holder  was just under 10 minutes.
